Around The World In 80 Meals by Diana Rubino has to be one of the best cruise ship cookbooks I've ever read! I have been highlighting meal after meal! Dang.. this cookbook, while nice to have on kindle.. I want a physical copy. The recipes all look like they've been given by some of the best chefs the seas have to offer! We love to cruise.. and, I was happy to see some of the dishes that I've actually had on board during various cruises.The author outdid herself with research, finding menus, recipes, and even included some of the modern sugar free dishes that folks enjoy while cruising! This one.. is a must have cookbook for the true cooking enthusiast!
I already had quite a few cookbooks, but I've never been on a cruise, so this book seemed like the perfect opportunity to get an inside peek at what kind of food folks indulge in on those luxury liners. Plus, it was also supposed to offer some insight into the various cruise lines, as well. (You know, just in case I ever DO take the leap and venture out on a cruise someday...)Bottom line, it's an okay book. Some of the menus were fairly opulent, but there weren't any recipes in the book that made me sit up and go, "WOW! I've gotta try THAT!" and very few new-to-me cooking tips. As for the info on the cruise lines, it was shallow, at best, so think of this book as primarily a cookbook. (But to be perfectly honest, I mostly skimmed the blah-blah-blah about the ships... I guess I'm not a great candidate for a cruise, eh?) A cookbook with standard recipes and zero photographs of the finished product.
Interesting historical information, and recipes that weren't as full of exotic ingredients as I had feared. If you can't spare the expense of an on ship experience, you can still take a ' flavor cruise' with some of these recipes. This cookbook is a major disappointment. It features recipes from famous cruise ships including special recipes for dignitaries and other famous people. The only pics are of the cruise ships and copies of some of the menus that were too small to read. It promised elegance but did not deliver with no pics of the recipes. Not only that the formatting was all over the place with huge letters with extra black sprinkled around the book. There really is no original work here but just copied and pasted recipes. But... Around the World in 80 Meals gives you some of those delicious recipes with smaller servings. The one above - Potatoes Croquettes, is one of my favorite. They are simple to make and so delicious. They are a must try.You'll also find recipes like North Atlantic Crab Soup, Prime Rib of Beef au Jus and Creamed Horseradish to serve with it, Chocolate Mousse, and one I can't wait to try - Fruit with a Rum and Coconut Sauce.So take your own virtual cruise and enjoy some of those delicious dishes in your own kitchen. Live like a Queen or King without leaving your house. This is a very 'delicious' book to have.
