I’m 63 yrs old and consider myself an extremely “well read†person. My interests in books covers a huge spectrum of venues. I began my love for books mostly in Junior High school where I literally read every single book in its library. But in all my years of reading, I have never come across any story such as this. And I’ve read an studied serial killers from across the globe. These women’s story hit me in a way no other book has. In my lifetime I have never ever once cried over a book or story. Not even when I was employed by a police department seeing crime scene photos and hearing the stories attached to them, did I ever cry. However I wept my way through this book!!I wept at the abuse they suffered. I wept for joy at the birth of each of there beautiful children. And finally I sobbed at the horrific details of these beautiful children’s grotesque murders, committed by their own father’s.Words cannot express the deepest grief I feel at the loss of these mothers beautiful innocents. My heart is utterly shattered and my mind is still incapable of comprehending the magnitude of such an evil act. I wish there was a way to tell both June and Giselle how much they are loved and respected for having the strength to put down on paper the worst imaginable atrocities enacted in their lives. I do know that the memory of their children will be forever enshrined in my heart and soul. For the first time in my life, I will not be quickly moving on to my next books in my reading list. My heart and soul needs time for itself to heal and come to terms with what I’ve read here. I send them my sincerest love and prayers. God bless.
This is the story of two women, and the abusive and degrading husband they had. Those two husbands, not connected at all in life, ended up killing their children on the same day. Somehow these two women became aware of each others' horror, and the book is a cleverly written story of how those women came to be married and endured after the nightmares they experienced. It's written with first one woman speaking, telling her story, and then it switches to the second woman. Then it keeps on going back and forth, taking the reader through their childhoods, meeting their future husbands, having children, living with a monster, and then having him murder their children.I have often heard people ask why in the world a woman would stay with such an abusive husband, Usually, it's the "non-abused" women who say this. None of us can understand the reasons, because we didn't live it. I am a fortunate one. Married 46 years to a man who has never even raised his voice to me. Three wonderful, accomplished grown, married children.Yet, many women do have terrible husbands, and the problem, as pointed out in this book, is that they often have no place to go. Many of them don't have the skills or education to make it alone financially, and the fear of losing their children to a husband bringing in the money sometimes leads to a tragic end. Also, as evident in this book, there are not sufficient shelters for abused women and their children. And even if there are, what is done to help these women become financially independent? Are there job training classes offered? This was a tragic story, but these two women will survive. They will never get over the pain, but they will survive. This book is worth reading, because perhaps there is someone out there who might come across this story who has the ability or influence within his or her community to do more for women in this situation, to prevent other possibly horrendous outcomes.
Five stars evidently means, based on Amazon's star rating, that "I love it" as a book. I can't say I "loved" it because its such a heart rending account, so I'll say the five stars for me, indicate that the story was well written and totally worth a five star rating. The true account of such unimaginable acts, was a difficult read, in that it was pure horror what happened to these two mothers, however it was a very well written and well thought out account of two stories combined into one. After reading it, I thought of the amazing resilience of these two very strong women, which might sound strange, considering that they blamed themselves for not being strong or not being able to avert the future events they felt they should have known or seen coming. Yet, that's why hindsight is 20/20, no one can know what will happen ... we can think we will as observers or readers, but no matter how much we think "this wouldn't have happened to me", all I can think is 'walk a mile in my shoes' and then decide if one can be so sure of what will and won't or can't happen to you, or someone you love.
My husband was a combination of the two monsters in this book. When I finally left him, he kidnapped our five month old daughter and "gave" her to an elderly couple in another city and he went on to another city with his mistress just to spite me for leaving him. I was lucky. I got my child back, and escaped my nightmare of a marriage in one piece. With tears in my eyes, I read this book in one sitting, it was just that compelling. My child is now forty-four years old, I'm now sixty-three and to this day I am still afraid of getting married again because of what I went through. I applaud these two brave women for sharing their stories. It could have happened to me...
...I have a different response. Our daughter just (finally) went to the police after her husband hit her. She got a TRO, grabbed their two small daughters, moved, and filed for divorce. He says it's her fault - their daughters are "his" and not hers - so I reread the book with a different perspective. He could grab the girls and run to his country (Ash's country). He could kill our daughter first, then run. Sociopaths are everywhere, hiding behind smiles and gifts, and many of them are spouses and fathers. For Giselle and June, their sociopath husbands turned out to be murderers.Keep talking, ladies. Maybe some woman will hear you and get away in time.
