If you're like me and thought to yourself on a random day in your 30s, "I think I'll teach myself to sew!", then this book is for you. I literally know nothing. I can't hand stitch a button to save my life. I was sick of donating or throwing away stuff with minor problems because I couldn't fix it. This book really helped me get the jargon down (there's A LOT of sewing jargon). It gives short, concise, simple explanations about all things sewing. There's a lot of helpful tips to avoid common mistakes. I can't imagine why an experienced sewer would want this. I read some negative reviews and they all seemed like they were pissed off because they already knew this stuff. Well... For the rest of the dummies who know nothing, like me, I loved it.
It's been about 15 years since I seriously sewed. I sewed my children's clothes when they were young and quite a few of my own clothes. This past Christmas, I tried to make a pillow case for my grand-daughter's jumbo pillow. I couldn't even remember how to wind my bobbin correctly. Soooo, ordered this book, is more than helpful & I've now cut out fabric to make her another pillow case.
I started sewing about 8 months ago, other than a high school sewing class. When I started sewing I borrowed Sewing for Dummies from the nearby library and enjoyed it so much I purchased the booked. It's a great reference book to have on hand for when you need to know how to sew......It also has a few sewing projects in the book for you to practice certain sewing techniques. These practice projects are priceless. Better to practice on these projects before you embark on your own sewing journey. It will save you a lot of heart ache, trust me.I haven't actually read the book cover to cover, although I would recommend it. Myself, I was just to anxious to get sewing. I read the first three chapters. But I have have opened it quite a few times when I needed to know a sewing technique. It gives great instructions and it encompasses all the basics.I borrowed it from the library for about 2 months and finally purchased the book, I've owned the booked for about 5 months now.Compared to other books I like how you don't need to read it cover to cover. I can reference the book as I go, project to project. Learning techniques as I go. However, I probable missed tips not reading it cover to cover. So the choice is up to you, reading it cover to cover or just referencing it as you go. Compared to other books I like how it reads, it's not monotonous. It's doesn't read like an encyclopedia. It points out special tips and no nos. I just enjoying sewing more than I do reading.This book will never be outdated like some reference books, sewing techniques don't change much. Once you grasp the basics maybe you could pass it on to a future novice, or even a family member to keep the art and joy of sewing alive.
I have found a lot of helpful information in this easy to read and understandable book. I only flip through it when I need to but it is nice to have when I get stuck on a project. I would most definitely recommend this book to any sewer beginner or a novice
Well written and covers all the basics for the beginner sewer. Would have liked a few more illustrations but that is just a personal preference. Recommended if you are buying for a budding seamstress.
I bought this book for my mother in law who recently took up sewing. She found it very helpful taking a newbie from the basics to your first sewing projects. With helpful tips along the way, this book lists step by step instructions from stitches to completing a project to understanding your machine.
I am new to sewing. This book introduces a person to the tools that a professional uses to sew. The book explains that there are many different types of fabric. Most of the book is dedicated to sewing techniques that the author believes are challenging or interesting. I appreciate having this book. There are websites that have videos and DVDs.
Sewing For Dummies is one of the best investments I have bought for my adventures in sewing. I almost didn't buy it because of some other comments I read on Amazon for this book. However, at my daughters insistence I purchased the book and am so glad I did. It is very informative and if you are working on a project, as I was at the time, and don't understand what the directions mean, just look the subject up in the index and you get meanings and or step-by-step instructions. A must have for beginners as well as those who have been sewing for a long time.
