About the Author
In 1977 at the age of 14, Sokreaksa "Reaksa" Himm saw 13 members of his family murdered by Khmer Rouge soldiers in the Killing Fields of Cambodia. Miraculously surviving the massacre, Reaksa swore revenge against the men responsible for the loss of his family. Years later, after surviving the horrors of refugee camps and roving death squads, Reaksa had a life-changing conversion to Christianity that gave him a whole new reason to seek the murderers: to forgive them. He is currently a missionary in Cambodia, where he builds schools, plants churches and trains leaders. Reaksa authored two books on the tragedy and his journey to forgiveness: The Tears of My Soul and After the Heavy Rain.

My father is a survivor of the Khmer Rouge as well and this book is just absolutely heart-wrenching but also incredibly inspiring. It makes my life trials seem minuscule compared to what he went through. This is a definite MUST READ especially for anyone dealing with bitterness, anger, a longing for revenge, or an unwillingness to forgive someone who wronged them. This poor man literally suffered some of the worst things that could ever happen to humans, and yet he still found joy and happiness and meaning in life through Christ. I cannot recommend this book more. I'm about to start the sequel, After the Heavy Rain
This is a simple book depicting a horrific story. I cannot say I "enjoyed" the story, because nobody enjoys these events, but I find that reading about events like this are essential to understand as much as possible about human suffering, and about the capability of humans to survive and thrive after atrocities. We all have so much in common, and this author makes that startlingly clear in his writing. He is not "someone who suffered," he is one of us. For much of his life he felt alienated, but his journey to help him truly feel the love of those around him is inspiring and beautiful. This is a story of stages. Anger, strength, isolation, depression, faith, forgiveness, and love. All written in simple, beautiful words.
This was really an amazing account of what life was like for a man who grew up on the killing fields as a pre-teen. He suffered from PTSD after he survived (unknowingly to the killers) "being sent to school"/sent to be killed with his very large family, including his baby brother. He explains how God had always protected him in Cambodia and how if it were not for Jesus, he wouldn't be able to live in peace today. What a beautiful man of God he is. I read this book in a day because I was just glued to the pages.
I loved this book! If your interested in young people going through adversity ..starvation, prison work.....and a threat of death hanging over them 24 hours a day then you will like this. Cambodia is a HOLOCAUST just as world war 2. Happening while we were all going about our own business in the 1970's and I DIDN"T KNOW! I am so sorry I didn't know!
How could anyone come away not changed by hearing Sokreaksa's story? Amazing and life-changing stuff.
This book is written straight from the authors own experiences. It is a road of loss, saddness and forgiveness. It was a brutally honest book that open my eyes to the tradegy in Cambodia.
A true account of the power of God In the life of an honest heart. Honesty does pay--God does lead, even if we do not yet know Him. And if we need to get rid of our dishonesty, He will help us with that! I know from first hand experience. I love to read books about the power of God to forgive.
