From the Inside Flap

Branson, Missouri may simultaneously be the most fun, toe-tapping, memory-making, laugh-inducing, family-loving experience you will ever have. A gem nestled in the Ozark Mountains, visitors have been coming for over one hundred years to cruise "The Strip" and sample the best of the past and the thrills of tomorrow. It all started with a famous book - The Shepherd of the Hills (still an outdoor theater play) and continued with the award-winning 1800s theme park, Silver Dollar City. Country music and comedy soon took the stage with the Presley's and Baldnknobber shows, until today, where the Live-Entertainment Capitol of the World is home to tens of thousands of theater seats, multiple museums, culinary delights to tempt every taste, and the natural beauty of three extensive lakes. In just one vacation, you can rise to the top of the tower at Inspiration Point, plumb the depths of Marvel Cave, discover the old homestead at Lakeside Wilderness, eat a "foot" of chocolate, honk a wacky quacker, and shop an old-time five-and-dime. From outlet malls to boutique stores, Branson is also the place for bargains. When night falls, find your groove on the Branson Landing's boardwalk as the fire and fountain show blazes into the night, eat at a floating restaurant, and watch the city glow from the top of the 150-foot Ferris Wheel. You won't want to miss a moment of the excitement....unless, of course, you do. In that case, kick back in a cabin at Big Cedar Lodge and watch the sun set over Table Rock Lake. Have a late breakfast at Top of the Rock, then paddle along Taneycomo and fish for rainbow trout. Finish out the day with a lazy scenic drive and a flea market find. National forests and state parks offer hours of happy wandering with wildlife, and you just might stumble on a secret even the locals haven't found yet. Whether you yearn for city fun or country quiet, there's something for everyone here in the Ozarks. In Branson, you can have the trip you've always dreamed of.

About the Author

Karen Nelson writes from her Missouri home in the Ozarks. Her two university degrees have been of no use in dealing with two teenagers, a neurotic dog, a grumpy cat, a miniature horse, or Hamish the pet hedgehog. They have, however, assisted her in her teaching career, as a tour guide, and running local businesses. Her collection of short stories, AFTER EVER AFTER, was released in 2016. This is her seventh nonfiction book.

It is a lighthearted book with very brief descriptions of attractions and restaurants in Branson. There is very little information for 150 page book, however. The font is super huge and with only one attraction per page (and just a few sentences of description on each topic), it seems as though the 150 pages could actually be less than 40 pages in a regular format.

What to do in Branson? “100 Things to Do in Branson Before You Die” by Karen Nelson gives enough suggestions to keep you busy, no matter how old (or young) you are before you start pushing up daisies. An alert to readers before you get into this review: Karen is my “favorite” niece living in Taney County, (though I have dozens of other favorites in other Missouri counties); the book is dedicated to me; and I had hired Karen to do some research for me when writing and edition of my “Insiders’ Guide to Branson and the Ozark Mountains” years ago. However, as a retired Professor of English, I can fail a relative for bad writing and research easier and quicker than a politician can turn himself into a lobbyist. I expect a relative to be a cut above the average writer. This paperback is small enough to fit in your backpack, your aunt’s fanny pack, or the console of the family van--and large enough to keep you busy for several two-week vacations. It includes virtually every must-see and must-do that I would have recommended and a dozen I’ll have to do before I die. I liked the tips to lengthen or shorten some of things and the suggested things for “Family Fun,” “Museum Junkies,” (she left out the Veterans Museum), “Seasonal Activities,” and “Free Stuff."What is especially good is an index—to try to find a shop to return to or the exact page to get an original kewpie or find good fudge. Each “thing” is briefly described in a half page or less and includes relevant phone numbers, the address for your GPS (necessary for those out-of-the-way “things”) and the website for menus, ticket prices, or show times--the “more information” one often needs. In short, I would give the book an A-. It is helpful, informative, and proves that books are still a “good thing” in the internet age.

Karen, my grandpa had a cabin in Notch, and Mom picked us up on last day of school and we spent the summer here. Dad would fly in on weekends and best of times were had. We owned the ground where the Dairy Queen is on Hwy 76. Of course back then it was quite the drive on 65 or 76. And "Branson Strip" ended downtown, and everyone knew everyone. I so loved reading your book. We moved here full-time in 1989, so we 'saw it all' as it was being built. But, your book made our little piece of Heaven brand new. We have dog earred so many pages of places we haven't seen!! Your book is coffee table worthy, and hasn't been on the bookshelf yet!!
