About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

I've taught piano for almost 35 years, and this is my favorite beginner book, regardless of student's age. This series uses the Middle C approach first, then moves on to C chord position, G chord position, and F chord position as you go through the various book levels. Amazon has a great price, too.
This book arrived on time!I recently purchased a piano because I used to play when I was younger. Little did I know that my 5 year old would be so into it as well. I started writing out music for her to read, and once she could figure out those notes/keys, I asked if she wanted to learn more. A friend recommended this series, and I'm so glad I purchased it. She loves picking out this book and playing the piano. On top of that, she's so proud of herself! She's gone through the entire book, and loves playing songs for me all the time! I love it. I highly recommend this book!
We just started lessons and this book was required by his teacher. He is very interested in learning the piano and is tackling this book! I would recommend it, even if you don't have a teacher. The book starts off very basic and gradually builds complexity. He prefers that I don't get involved when he practices and I am consistently amazed to hear him tackle a new song simply by following along with the numbers (each finger is numbered - thumb is 1, pointer 2, etc. - and the book shows you where to place your fingers on the keys). Totally recommend it. We also purchased the theory book that goes along with it and "A dozen a day" exercise book.
This is a great book for very young beginners. I teach piano and love this series of books. The kids love the colorful pictures and words to the songs.
I am a music teacher and this series is one of my favorites. I teach children 3-9 in this series up through level 2. Its very teacher, student and parents friendly and keeps the student moving at a fun and quick pace.

My little cousin has just gotten into learning piano and I wanted a book to help her learn on her own and this is perfect! It is super easy to ready and understand. And it teaches them how to read sheet music down the line which is an added bonus. It’s a cute book and I highly recommend.
my grandson loves this book. The one we tried first was too old for him...not more advanced, just approached differently.
