Review
* “With obvious affection for Tintin, Pullman threads this complicated skein of plot with customary measures of awe and menace... he proves an expert visual storyteller. Fordham animates with characters who have the detail and agility of a Studio Ghibli cast... Anything new from Pullman is big news, and his first original graphic novel won't disappoint.†-- Booklist, starred review* "The various plot threads coalesce into a powerful tale, with the artwork creating a soaring, cinematic feel. A modern seafaring epic, highly recommended for all Pullman and fantasy fans and more than worthy of its author's oeuvre." -- School Library Journal, starred review“Pullman has created an intricate blend of science fiction and adventure, skillfully weaving together many disparate elements into a cohesive and exciting tale. Fordham's art, although realistic and spare, is cinematic in scope, imbuing this with all the momentum of a Hollywood blockbuster.†-- Kirkus Reviews“The graphic novel format lets Pullman's (the His Dark Materials series) dialogue shine, and Fordham's lucid panels are strong, legible, and charged with energy.†-- Publishers Weekly

As a long time fan of Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, I eagerly picked up what I'm sure will be the first of a graphic novel series by Phillip Pullman. John Blake [the boy in the red shirt on the cover] was rescued at sea in 1929 by a time-traveling "ghost" schooner Mary Alice crewed by men from many historical eras. Their engineer Marcus Tullius Pallas is from ancient Rome. Their cook Sammy Wu lost a fortune in the 1890's silk trade when his former ship sank. Serena Henderson [the ship's most recent rescue] is an Australian girl from 2017 whose family was sailing around the world. A spunky female clerk from the International Maritime Organization, a suave member of a British secret service, and a sinister communications CEO billionaire [whose main henchman is a master of "enhanced interrogation"] all show obsessive interest in the schooner which can voyage through time and space. The first two want to find the ship; the CEO wants to destroy it.Fred Fordham's art combines the best of Hugo Pratt's CORTO MALTESE romanticism with the colorfully clean lines of Herge's TINTIN. Pullman's prose pulls you through this compulsive page-turner leaving you wanting more as you wait for the next volume. I'm being intentionally vague so that any new reader can experience the joys of discovery as I did when they dip into the THE ADVENTURES OF JOHN BLAKE.
Not truly a book for children 8 to 12, and I can understand why other reviewers said their young were bored with it. (Just because the protagonist is an adolescent does not mean the book is meant for children. This was the publisher's mistake in pitching it this way.) Large glorious images - with plenty of mystery - of the "ghost ship" and its crew of time-travellers are interspersed with many work-a-day scenes inside office cubicles. But the story is gripping and the twists on physics entertaining and eye-catching - Albert Einstein makes a cameo, and who doesn't want to see him in a Graphic Novel? I had two small quibbles with Fred Fordham's generally excellent drawings. The first is all his people are uniformly tall and slender, the men all in suits and all looking like those old drawings of men's wear fashions from a 1950's newspaper ad. No diversity or attempt at reality in physical form, at all, even when we travel to Fiji. The second - and how this passed the eye of an art editor I do not know (they had no art editor?) - when the teenaged female protagonist is fished out of the ocean, she is drawn lying on the deck, recovering, immediately after. She is perfectly dry. She was deep underwater and has been rescued by the young John Blake. Her hair should be plastered to her face and shoulders; her clothes should be clinging; she should be lying in a small pool of water.... But these are minor. This GN for adults and older teens has plenty going for it, and I hope is followed by another of John Blake's adventures as he attempts to return to his own time.
Fun read on the new 12.9 ipad pro. Call it a test run for the graphics capabilities of the new toy. Both novel and ipad passed.
The drawings are amazing. The story was rich with detail and very engaging. Both my son and I loved the book!
The illustrations power the plot, develop the characters, and create the scene. This is not a book with pictures. The artwork is the most important part. I like Philip Pullman, but he should have taken second billing.
Arrived on time, securely packaged, and as described. My grandson and I liked the story. I liked the illustrated novel format (first time I have read an illustrated novel).
Great fun! Good story and wonderful drawings. If anything, I'd like it to be longer.
An art style that reminds me of that found in The Books of Magic makes for an interesting work with a distinct flavor when combined with Philip Pullman's fascination with history, intrigue, alternate realities, and iconic objects with mysterious powers. The reader is transported into glimpse after glimpse of action and intrigue in The Adventures of John Blake: Mystery of the Ghost Ship. There are so many characters, so many locations, so many times, and so much plot to absorb that one may be halfway through the book before getting a sense of how the puzzle pieces are meant to fit together. The understanding is worth the effort, and I presume that we haven't seen the last of John Blake at the end of the book.Although the suggested age group I see for readers of the graphic novel is 8-12 years or grades 3-7, the buyer might want to look through the book before giving it to a kid of that age, especially at the younger end of the range; there's a lot of violence in these pages. I think sex is completely absent. There may be some mild profanity--but, if so, the only time it stuck out to me was when part of a word was asterisked out.I was a bit amused that Dahlberg's ship was a big white one called Supremacy. I thought that was a nice, if not particularly subtle, touch of symbolism. There's a lot of attention to detail here--and, to my relief, the style of text and graphics didn't confuse me at all. I've seen a tendency of makers of graphic novels in recent years to place text and images in ways that don't always make sense to me, so I have trouble figuring out who's speaking or where an object is located. The neat layout of panels in The Adventures of John Blake may be a little rigid for some people's taste, but I found it to be straightforward in a way that prevented the style from interfering with the story.I may be compelled to read more about John Blake in the future, but His Dark Materials still holds its place as my favorite Philip Pullman work.
